Start with the choice

A dashboard can tell us that a measure changed. It cannot, on its own, determine what should be done. A decision requires an objective, feasible alternatives, relevant constraints, and a way to evaluate consequences. Those elements should shape the analysis before the first chart is drawn.

Connect evidence to alternatives

Ask which observations could change the preferred option. If an analysis cannot affect a choice, it may be useful monitoring—but its role should be stated plainly. Organize findings around the alternatives rather than around the order in which queries were run.

Keep uncertainty attached

An estimated effect, forecast, or cost comparison should carry its assumptions and uncertainty into the recommendation. A crisp recommendation can still be conditional: act when a threshold is met, collect more evidence when it is not, and revisit the choice when the environment changes.

Close the loop

Name the decision owner, define the outcome measure, and specify when to review the result. Analytics becomes decision intelligence when evidence is connected to action and action produces information that improves the next decision.
